48 inches. That’s how high the water rose in the homes of Ms. Dorothy and Mr. Ronald’s homes in Houston over 6 months ago. For the IRONMAN Foundation and its 100-plus athletes, race week at the 2018 Memorial Herman IRONMAN Texas North America Championship was more than just toeing the start line early Saturday morning—they created real change that will be felt in The Woodlands’ community long after they crossed the finish line.

As part of IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico and in partnership with Buena Vibra Foundation, New York Health & Racquet Club and Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, we adopted the nearby community of Barrio Ingenio, which remains devastated by Hurricane Maria. Grant funding will support the Buena Vibra Foundation’s ongoing roof reconstruction work, and on Monday, March 19, IRONMAN Foundation volunteers were transported to Barrio Ingenio for a Community Revitalization Volunteer Day. Working as teams in collaboration with community residents and leaders, we cleared debris, painted and cleaned several homes. Together we created a long-term, lasting impact and assisted with the emotional revitalization of the community by turning their post-hurricane shelters back into a vibrant community of homes. Students learned from the experts in athletic preparation, yoga and meditation, as well as healthy eating, including an “athlete fuel” lunch.
